Scale Lane Bridge used to highlight mental health messages
13 December, 2018

Inspirational messages and poems are to be placed on Scale Lane Bridge in Hull’s Old Town as part of the final phase of the ‘you are not alone’ mental health campaign for young people designed by HeadStart Hull’s young volunteers.

Taking place between Friday 14 December and Monday 14 January, a set of speakers with creative soundscapes will again challenge the stigma associated with mental health and suicide to raise awareness of the help available to young people.

After a series of installations in key landmarks earlier in the year, including the Humber Bridge and the Pier – Hull Marina, the campaign has now reached its last destination. Scale Lane Bridge was identified as another significant location by young volunteers from HeadStart Hull.

Christmas can be a difficult time for many different reasons, when people can feel isolated and lonely; the young volunteers felt this was another significant period to spread the word and reassure young people that they are not alone. Help is out there.

Councillor Peter Clark, Portfolio Holder for Learning, Skills and Safeguarding Children, said: “The ‘you are not alone’ campaign has been hugely powerful, reaching out a hand of support to other young people who may be struggling, to reassure them that there is help available and they do not have to cope with life’s challenges on their own.

“I am proud of what the young people have achieved so far and look forward to supporting further campaigns.

“Building young people’s resilience and mental wellbeing is an integral part of HeadStart Hull, ensuring they have the best possible chance to succeed.”

HeadStart is a five-year national programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund, from which Hull has secured £7.8million. HeadStart Hull aims to enable children and young people to have positive mental health and wellbeing, thrive in ‘their communities’ and to ‘bounce back’ from life’s challenges. This includes reducing stigma and enabling young people to access support when they need it.
