Hull’s Bonus Arena has been named as one of the world’s best up and coming venues by prestigious American publication Billboard.
The Myton Street venue is the only venue in England to be included in Billboard’s ’20 Music Venues to Watch in 2019’ list which was published this week. Venues in New York, Los Angeles, Montevideo and Washington are amongst those to join Hull’s newest entertainment venue in making the shortlist.
The arena is in esteemed company, joining the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, home of NBA team the Milwaukee Bucks, the 80,000-capacity Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and Rogers Place in Alberta, Canada, home of the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers.
The Bonus Arena is also only one of two venues in Europe to be included – the other being another SMG Europe venue TECA in Aberdeen – and only one of three outside of the US and Canada.
Billboard is an American entertainment media brand which publishes news, video and reviews and is known for its music charts including the Hot 100 and Billboard 200, tracking the most popular songs and albums in different genres. It also hosts events, owns a publishing firm and operates several TV shows.
Billboard magazine described the arena’s team as “exceptionally adept at social media promotion” following coverage of their pursuit of Liam Gallagher opening the arena last year. Liam’s brother, and fellow Oasis co-founder Noel Gallagher, announced a show at the Bonus Arena last week. Tickets sold out in a matter of minutes.
Dan Harris, General Manager at the Bonus Arena, said: “The Bonus Arena continues to put the city of Hull on the map – not just locally, but on the world stage too. Billboard is one of the most prestigious music publications in the world and to be included as one of the top 20 up-and-coming venues is a real honour.
“To be placed in the same conversation as huge arenas in New York, Los Angeles and Washington is testament to the hard work of the team and the fantastic support the city of Hull has given us since we opened last summer.”
