The rich history of Whitefriargate, Hull’s most famous thoroughfare, can be explored this half-term thanks to a new family-friendly trail.
The trail, which can be downloaded from the Visit Hull website, includes fun facts and information about the historic street’s medieval past and its stunning architecture.
It will also highlight some of the Old Town’s unique features such as Hepworth’s Arcade, England’s only L-shaped arcade, and the country’s smallest window.
Councillor Dave Craker, portfolio holder for leisure and tourism at Hull City Council, said: “Whitefriargate is one of our city’s most historic areas, so it’s fantastic that as part of the street’s multi-million pound regeneration we are able to explore and celebrate its rich history.
“This trail highlights why Whitefriargate’s rich past will play an important role in its bright future.”
The trail begins at Beverley Gate and weaves its way down Whitefriargate, finishing in Trinity Square.
The route includes lots of surprises, including unicorns and animals, many of which are hidden in the area's stunning architecture.
It forms part of the Hull High Street Heritage Action Zone project funded by Historic England.
The project aims to uncover stories related to Hull Old Town and its rich cultural heritage.
Craig Broadwith, historic places adviser at Historic England, said: “Whitefriargate has a fascinating history, which is reflected in the fact that there are more than 30 listed buildings on the street. This tour will be a treat for anyone with an interest in Hull’s heritage.”
Anyone who completes the trail can pick-up a free certificate from the Visit Hull Welcome Information Pod in Paragon Interchange, or by contacting welcometohull@hullcc.gov.uk
