A community campaign aimed at helping children have fun with food and delivering health and cost benefits to their families will take centre stage at a festival in Hull.
The Food 360 project is based in East Hull and works with schools and community organisations to promote growing your own food and cooking the produce.
It will reach a wider audience when it sets out its stall for two days at the Yum! Festival of Food and Drink on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 July.
“What we do is all about showing children and their families how much fun they can have with food,” said project co-ordinator Adrian Fisher.
“Not all of the activities are food-related - at the Yum! Festival we’ll have circus performers. But we’ll also do food tasting and we’ll have a company that makes its own ice cream and sells it from a traditional barrow on a tricycle.
“We’ll also be showing children how to plant seeds that they can then take away and grow at home, and we’ll demonstrate how people can grow their own food in small areas at home.
“A lot of people think things like that are really difficult so we’ll show them it’s easy and fun, and if they go home and try it we’ll follow up with advice to help them.”
The Food 360 displays and demonstrations will take place in Trinity Square in the Old Town of Hull and the team will work closely with the top class chefs including TV’s Gerard Baker who will be showing their skills in the Tasty Tent in nearby Princes Dock Street.
“We’ve worked with Gerard before and he’s a big supporter of what we do,” said Adrian.
The Yum! Festival is organised by Hull BID to promote the city’s food and drink businesses and producers.
“The event will feature the Copper Saucepan Award contested by chefs from some of our finest hotels and restaurants but it is important for children to understand the importance of good food and that’s where Food 360 comes in,” said Jennifer Marshall, Hull BID’s marketing co-ordinator.
“Food 360’s demonstrations at last year’s Yum! Festival were very popular so we’re delighted to have them back for a second helping this year.”
