The public have a unique chance to cast a vote as artefacts from the Hull Maritime Museum will go head-to-head and form part of a future ‘People’s Choice’ exhibition.

As part of the major Hull maritime project, the museum’s curatorial team need your help to select 100 items to feature in the new displays at the Hull Maritime Museum.

From albatross beaks to brass bells, up to 200 items will be up for selection and you can vote for your chosen object or artefact daily. Many of these artefacts have never been on display before and range from the historically significant through to the simply curious.

As more of the Grade II-listed Victorian Hull Maritime Museum is opened up, there will be 50 percent more objects on public display when the museum reopens in late 2023, after an £11m refurbishment.

From Monday 24 February, two objects will compete, each day, in an effort to make the final list. To cast your vote, visit @Hullmaritime on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram each day.

Councillor Daren Hale, Portfolio Holder for Economic Investment, Regeneration, Planning, Land and Property, said: “As more of the stunning Victorian architecture is revealed, more maritime objects and stories will go on display, and some for the very first time.

“The museum has a huge collection of maritime objects and artefacts and it's important residents and the wider public can engage with this exciting project.

“This is just one of the many activities taking place to keep the museum fresh in everyone’s minds during its closure.

“We need as many people as possible to get involved and select their favourites.”

Children from Collingwood Primary School have already selected the first People’s Choice object – an intricately decorated ostrich egg. More school and community groups will be getting involved to help to pick and write exhibit labels in the coming months.

Don’t worry if you don’t see your favourite artefacts in the People’s Choice vote. Plans for the new exhibitions and displays are already well underway and many old favourites already have an allocated home.
