A cake creator whose designs range from camper vans to the Colosseum is looking forward to adding the City of Culture to her portfolio.
Judy Newlove, owner of Sugar ’n’ Spice, will badge some cup cakes with the City of Culture logo when she takes her place at the Yum! Festival of Food and Drink next month.
Experience tells her that the sweet treats will fly off the shelves, and as a seasoned supplier of exquisitely decorated cakes to the corporate market she is planning to come up with some cultural creations in the countdown to 2017.
Judy said: “City of Culture is all about celebration and creativity and that’s at the heart of what we do. We already work with a lot of big businesses in the area and we are experts at making and decorating cakes for those very special occasions.”
Judy opened her first shop in Cottingham five years ago after the business outgrew her home in Brough. A second shop followed in Paragon Street, Hull, two years ago and last year Sugar ’n’ Spice made its debut at the Yum! Festival.
Judy said: “There are nine of us working in the business but I expect we’ll have to bring in a few extra helpers if last year’s event is anything to go by.
“We concentrated on cup cakes last year and we sold a lot more than expected so this year we’re putting more effort into our preparations and we’re also taking more products, including macaroons, brownies and cake pops which are all becoming more and more popular.”
The presence at last year’s Yum! Festival also generated interest in the training side of the business, and Judy said she’s not afraid to share the secrets of how to make spectacular cakes.
She said: “That side of the business has grown with more and more people wanting to make their own cakes, so we run classes to show them how to do it and they come back to us to buy ingredients and decorations.”
Kathryn Shillito, HullBID City Centre Manager, said: “Sugar ’n’ Spice was one of the most attractive stalls at the Yum! Festival last year with every cake a work of art, and the designs on the website suggest Judy really can create a cake for any occasion.
“We’ve got more stalls than ever this year and a greater variety as well and we’re also extending the twin attractions of food and entertainment into the evening in the festival marquee, making it ideal for people who want to enjoy the free attractions after work.”
The opening night of the festival on on Thursday 7 August will showcase the Best of British, presented by Thieving Harry’s café bar and including live music from the Hillbilly Troupe.
On Friday 8 August Stanley’s Brasserie will deliver the Taste of the USA programme, with the sounds of New Orleans from Jazz P’zazz. Tapasya Indian restaurant will take centre stage on the evening of Saturday 9 August with demonstrations by celebrity chef KK Anand and authentic Indian entertainment by Gvants.
