The country may be getting excited about the birth of a new prince or princess, but it is the birthday of King Willem-Alexander of Holland which is being celebrated in Hull on Saturday.
Nick and Bernie Wright from Go Dutch Pancake House are putting on a Koningsdag (King’s Day) event outside their restaurant in Paragon Square from 11am-3pm on 25 April.
Nick and Bernie have joined forces with the local Dutch community in Hull, and the event will include a traditional Dutch flea market with stallholders coming along to sell their wares. This can be anything and everything, and is likely to resemble a jumble sale, using gazebos which have been supplied by HullBID.
As you would expect from an event celebrating all that is good about the Netherlands, tulips will also be in abundance, with the opportunity to purchase everything from single flowers to huge bunches – just like they do in Holland. Bob’s Bikes on Beverley Road will also be bringing along a selection of Dutch bikes, which have become very popular in the UK.
Nick said: “We got word of Koningsdag last year and since there is a growing Dutch community in Hull, we thought it would be a good idea to get on board with it.
“We want to get people into the area. We are going to paint the place orange!”
In fact, if you turn up to the event wearing an item of orange – the official colour of the Netherlands, in reference to the House of Orange to which the Royal Family belongs - and purchase any 12” pancake, you will get a free glass of wine, beer or a soft drink.
One of the beers which Go Dutch Pancake House sells is Trappe, which is a beer from a Dutch monastery and is extremely popular both here and over the North Sea. Plus, they have a good selection of Belgian beers to tickle your tastebuds.
Soft drinks include a delicious syrupy cordial, which has more flavour than its British counterparts, and comes in blackcurrant, forest fruits, strawberry, apple and blackcurrant, and lemon. They are well worth a try!
All Go Dutch Pancake House ingredients are authentic, with Nick going across to Holland on the ferry every five weeks to stock up on the special Pannenkoek flour which he uses for his pancakes, as well as a variety of sweets, sprinkles, toppings and drinks.
With plain 12” pancakes starting at £3.45 and a variety of meat, cheese, vegetable, fruit and spreadable toppings, as well as unusual savoury and enticing sweet specials, why wait until Shrove Tuesday? Get along to Paragon Square on Saturday and Go Dutch for the day.
