Works will soon get underway to install new parklet outdoor seating areas on Princes Dock Street.

A published decision record confirmed Hull City Council has awarded a contract to local firm Pearl Green Engineering Limited to manufacture, supply, deliver and install the project.

The six parklets will be in the existing pedestrianised zone between McCoy’s and Bar 82 and will initially be in place on a trial basis.

They will help to transform Princes Dock Street as part of the regeneration of the Old Town, whilst also reinforcing the council’s commitment to supporting the city’s evening economy in an area featuring bars and restaurants.

Cllr Paul Drake-Davis, Hull City Council’s portfolio holder for regeneration, said: “Parklets bring numerous virtues to cities, transforming underutilised spaces into dynamic public realms.

“They can enhance community engagement, promote pedestrian-friendly environments, introduce green infrastructure and support local businesses.

“Princes Dock Street is already popular with Hull’s evening economy and this trial will give the council a better insight into parklets’ impact for the area’s hospitality businesses during the summer months.”

Should the trial prove successful and greater demand is generated, a full tender process will be instigated by the council.

Eventually, the parklets used in the trial will be relocated to other high streets and commercial districts in Hull as part of the four-year £6m Local Centres investment scheme.

Businesses will also be engaged for the parklets for Princes Dock Street which are in addition to two units which will shortly be installed on Silver Street following the amendments of a traffic regulation order.

These are to be placed at either end of Silver Street, one outside One Stop and one opposite Silvers Bar.
