The team behind a new hair and beauty salon in Hull are celebrating HullBID Fashion Week by inviting clients to make them an offer they can’t refuse.
Kelly O’Neill, Manager of Hair@Quayside, and Beauty Manager Jodie Harding came up with the idea because they decided playing the percentages was too predictable.
“Everywhere we looked people were offering 10 per cent off this or that but we wanted to think outside the box and come up with something different,” said Kelly.
“So we’re inviting people to tell us what they want and then make us an offer. We’re not guaranteeing we will accept, because there is a risk to this so we’ve worked out how much we need to make to cover our costs, but there will be some good deals to be had and it should be fun.”
Kelly has worked in hairdressing since she left school and she was given the chance to set up her own salon by, Irene Wyndham, a client at the salon where she worked before.
Irene, who spent time in Hull when she worked for P&O Ferries, now lives in South Africa but still makes visits to East Yorkshire.
“Irene has property in the area and wanted to invest in a business so she decided on hairdressing and asked me to be the manager,” said Kelly, who opened the salon in November in Princes Dock Street, Hull.
“We tried to be different from the start. We brought in a proper piano for our opening night party and had a great time. The invitation to make us an offer is part of the same approach. It’s intended to generate a bit of banter and it’s worked already – we’ve had some silly offers but that’s all part of the fun.
“Fashion Week is a great idea and we’ll be thinking of more offers during the summer to tie in with the other HullBID events.”
The offer is active for bookings during HullBID Fashion Week from opening time at 10am on Tuesday 30 April until closing time at 5.30pm on Saturday 4 May. It will extend across all of the salon’s services, which include hair, nails, waxing, threading and ear-candling as well as cuts for men.
“If someone wants a particular hairstyle that we don’t normally do we can look it up on the internet,” said Kelly.
“As far as I can remember I’ve only been stuck once, years ago when someone came into the salon where I worked and said they wanted their hair like Purdey from the New Avengers. We had to get them to bring a picture in!”
Kathryn Shillito, HullBID City Centre Manager, said: “This year’s HullBID Fashion Week promises to be the best yet and that is entirely down to the level of involvement from our city centre businesses.
“Hair@Quayside is a terrific new arrival to our fashion and beauty scene and the challenge to make them an offer shows that Kelly and Jodie have that innovative approach which is an asset to any business.”
