What a phenomenal start to 2017.... City of Culture arrived with a bang and we’re all excited to see what’s next!
Below is a list of events in Hull city centre which we expect to be popular, in fact some may be oversubscribed already. But you may wish to use this information when you are arranging stock and staffing levels, particularly if you are a food and beverage business.
More details on all City of Culture events can be found on www.hull2017.co.uk, and we recommend visiting this website. The next printed booklet of events, produced by the Hull 2017 team, is expected at the end of February. This will cover April to September.
2nd January – 19th March: Bowhead, Maritime Museum
An impressively lifelike audio-visual installation of a bowhead whale.
3rd January – 24th February: Hull Charters, Hull History Museum
These important documents show how the people of Hull were granted privileges, rights and responsibilities, which affect how we live today.
13th January – 21st April: Pietro Lorenzetti, Ferens Art Gallery
Having undergone extensive conservation treatment, Pietro Lorenzetti’s famous panel painting Christ between Saints Paul & Peter (c.1320) takes pride of place.
16th January – 31st March: Fabulous Felines, Streetlife Museum
Drawn postcards featuring comic, fashionably-dressed cats
21st January – 1st May: Francis Bacon’s Screaming Popes, Ferens Art Gallery
Five of Francis Bacon’s notorious Screaming Popes join the Ferens collection
3rd February: Coum Transmissions opening event, Fruit
Using sound, imagery and the human voice, Cosey Fanni Tutti and P-ORRIDGE confront, subvert and challenge conventional society.
17th – 19th February: Mind on the Run – The Basil Kirchin Story, Hull City Hall
A three-day live music festival featuring members of Goldfrapp, The Specials and St Etienne.
17th February – 2nd April: Hullywood Icons Exhibition, HIP Gallery, Princes Quay
A re-run of the infamous projected images of Hull residents recreating famous film scenes, shown during Made in Hull
24th February – 25th March: The Hypocrite, Hull Truck Theatre
A riotous comedy centred around the circumstances in which King Charles I was refused entry to Hull, starring Mark Addy and Caroline Quentin.
22nd March – 29th May (TBC) – Weeping Window Poppies, Maritime Museum
A cascade comprising several thousand handmade ceramic poppies, Poppies: Weeping Window was originally seen pouring from a high window to the ground below at the Tower of London.
25th – 26th March: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders from Mars, City Hall
Original Spiders drummer Woody Woodmansey and legendary producer Tony Visconti perform the first live performance of this album in its entirety.
26th September – 7th January: Turner Prize, Ferens Art Gallery
The world renowned arts prize showcasing vibrant visual art.
